An RDS CAL is a license that enables users/devices to access a Windows Server. This blog post will explain in detail how to install and configure a Remote Desktop License Server (RDS CAL) on Windows server 2019.
Open the Server Manager, then click Add Roles and Features
Click on "Next" in the "Before you start" section.
Select the option Role based then click on Next
Navigate to the Select a server from the server pool option and click Next. Or you can choose the Select a virtual hard disk option
Mark the role Remote Desktop Services then click on Next.
The Features section should be left as default, then click Next.
Click on Next again.
Now, add the role services Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing and click on Next.
Mark the option Restart the destination server automatically if required then click Install
Once finished Click on Close.
Let’s open “Server Manager”, select Tools, click on Terminal Services then click on Remote Desktop Licensing Manager:
In the RD License Manager, you need to expand the server section and click on Activate Server
A window with “Welcome to the Activate Server Wizard” will appear. Click on Next
Click on Next after setting the connection method as Automatic .
Type your Full Name and your company name then click Next.
Put your emails and your company’s details then click on Next. Type your email and company details then click Next. Feel free to leave this field blank as it is optional Information fields
Install Licenses wizard is completed, click on Next to finish.
Right click your server name and click Install licenses
A window with “Welcome to the install licenses Wizard” will appear. Click on Next.
Select the license program License pack (Retail Purchase) and click on Next.
Type your License key, Click on Add then click on Next.
The RDS CAL is now activated.
